Los Tilos

Los Tilos

In Los Tilos you will gett an impression of the sub-tropical west-European woods of about 25 million years ago... This laurelwood, or lauriselva is a tertiair flora relic. When elswhere Europe sufferd of iceages and when th Sahara dried up, this family of laurellike trees maintained themselves in Macaronesië (Canary islands, Cabo Verde, Azores, Madeira and islands) and Socotera. In this area the haze woods could survive., thanks to the moderate climate. The low latitude, the rain of the trade winds and the moderating influence of the ocean form the ideal circumstances. The clouds of the trade winds change at an altitude of 600-1200 m. to the socalled ´horizontale rain´: plants and trees let the moisture condensate, afterwhich the drops fall and moistens the ground below.

Apart from many different endemic laurellikes, you might also see the rare pigeons Columba bollii (laurel pigeon) en de Columba junoniae (Rabiche pigeon). More change though that you´ll hear them: the chattering wings when the pigeons choose safer places. Beautifull walks to make in Los Tilos. The Marcos and Cordero is the mosty wellknown. You´ll walk 16 km. throug a serie of tunnels and will see and hear the water fall. This is dangerous when it rains or has rained, but worth it when it is dry.
