Roque de los MuchachosDue
to the very clean and clear sky La Palma was chosen for the installation
of an astrophysical complex on the Roque de los Muchachos (the rock
of the chaps). Together with the installation on Hawaii, it is the largest
in the world. Astro-physicians of all over the world work and live together
on the complex. The bulbous buildings give the Roque an almost alien
look. At night the roofs open, so the telescopes can be directed to
the beautiful skies. During some time in the summer the complex is open
for public. From the Roque de los Muchachos different hiking paths go
into the Caldera. One of them goes straight to El Pinar and Casa
Pajero (about 5 hours, one way). You might be able to make this
excursion with us (meal optinal and transport
included).
Good weather is a must, when you want to visit the Roque de los Muchachos. The best timing is at dawn. You will see a beuatiful sunrise and have excellent views on the ocean and into the Caldera. With some luck you might see the other Canary islands: La Gomera, El Hierro, Tenerife and sometimes even Gran Canaria. Later clouds will fall into the Caldera, like a cascade. A very special thing to see. Walking is good up there. The GR 131 goes on the edge of the crater and you might either walk this in eastern or western direction. You could be so lucky to see muflons: the wild sheep that once were expanded on La Palma, on dictator Franco´s command. |
